The International Museum Day, celebrated annually on 18 May, was created in 1977 by ICOM – the International Council of Museums, with the aim of encouraging society to reflect on the role of museums in societal development. Taking into account the social mission of museums and the new reality associated with the current pandemic, ICOM presents the theme for 2021: ‘The future of museums: recovering and reimagining’. Little by little, and in total safety, we are returning to normality. From 2 May until 30 June, the Mértola Museums units are open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9:15 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:00 pm to 5:15 pm, and on Sundays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm (closed on Monday and Sunday afternoon). The International Day for Monuments and Sites was created by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) on 18 April 1982, and approved by UNESCO the following year, with the aim of raising awareness to the diversity of heritage and the need for its preservation and appreciation.
