Cláudio Torres Mértola Museum – the project of a lifetime

The City Hall Meeting of 7 September 2022 unanimously approved the update of the Mértola Museum’s Internal Regulations, the most significant change being its new name: Mértola Museum – Cláudio Torres. This is a well-deserved tribute and acknowledgement of over 40 years of dedication to preserving and enhancing the heritage of Mértola, which is vividly represented in the 14 Mértola Museum Units.
Cláudio Torres’ pioneering vision combines Heritage with the territory and its people as the main local development drivers. The museum programme follows a multidisciplinary approach to heritage promotion and dissemination, featuring an engaging exhibition style that favours the installation of museum units at archaeological sites. The 14 museum units offer dynamic routes that explore the rich history of this area, deeply connected to the River Guadiana. In the words of Cláudio Torres, ‘the museum is the Town itself’.
Cláudio Torres deserves this honour and this acknowledgement. The Museum is proud of its ongoing commitment to excellence in preserving, promoting, and exhibiting Mértola’s heritage. Mértola and its people thank you!
During the 2022 Autumn Meeting held in Mértola, ICOM Portugal marked the occasion by presenting a document featuring texts by Maria de Jesus Monge, who was then President of the ICOM Board, Ana Paula Amendoeira, then Regional Director of Culture for Alentejo, and Santiago Macias, Director of the National Pantheon and researcher at the Mértola Archaeological Site. This document also includes the article ‘Mértola: the Castle, archaeology and… dreams’, published in 1979.
