9th Meeting of Southwestern Peninsular Archaeology
Loulé, 21, 22 and 23 October 2021
The Southwestern Peninsular Archaeology Meetings (EASP) have been held in several locations in Portugal and Spain since 1993. They aim to present news from archaeological research, results from ongoing research projects, and to discuss relevant issues in the archaeology of the Southwestern Peninsula, strengthening professional ties among Iberian researchers.
The 2021 edition will take place on 21, 22 and 23 October in Loulé and is organised by the University of the Algarve/Centre for the Study of Archaeology, Arts and Heritage Sciences (UAlg/CEAACP), Loulé City Council, the Algarve Regional Directorate for Culture and the Alentejo Regional Directorate for Culture.
The 9th EASP will also feature a tribute to Francisco Goméz Toscano, who passed away in 2018. He was a lecturer at the University of Huelva, one of the promoters of the EASP and a researcher who always sought to foster the exchange and sharing of knowledge among archaeologists on both sides of the border.
Mértola will be represented by researchers from the Campo Arqueológico de Mértola and Mértola City Council with the presentation of the following papers:
– Maria de Fátima Palma and Bilal Sarr, “First results of the IACAM project – Archaeological intervention at Cercas das Alcarias – Mesquita, Mértola. From Hispania to al_Ândalus: Arabisation, Islamisation and Resistance in the Rural Environment (21 October);
– Virgílio Lopes, Clara Rodrigues, Susana Gómez Martinez, Maria de Fátima Palma and Marco Fernandes, “Balance of the archaeological works carried out on the slope of Mértola Castle 2020-2021 (21 October);
– Lígia Rafael, “The already known problem of “shards”: the issue of archaeological reserves” (21 October)
