During the month of July 2022, another campaign of archaeological excavations takes place in the Encosta do Castelo de Mértola, which has the presence of local volunteers and university students, from origins as diverse as Portugal, Ethiopia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka.
As in previous editions, this campaign is a joint organization of the Mértola Archaeological Field (CAM) and the Mértola City Council, with the former responsible for scientific coordination and the latter for technical and logistical support. In this context, the intention is to follow up on the interventions of previous years in Encosta do Castelo, in order to allow greater knowledge of this area and the various structures that have been emerging, in an environment of learning and knowledge sharing.
In this campaign, the intervention area is located next to the entrance to the cemetery, already intervened in the 80s and 90s by the CAM team and where Estácio da Veiga, at the end of the 19th century, mentions the existence of important vestiges of Mértola’s past.
