‘Enchanted Places, Heritage Spaces’
Location: National Museum of Ethnology (Lisbon)
Type: Temporary Exhibition
Date: 31 January 2020 to 31 May 2021
This exhibition focuses on the questioning of processes of identity construction departing from the connections between heritage and religion in contemporary Portuguese society. This question was the foundation for a series of field researches recently carried out by a team of researchers who looked at four case studies – Fátima, Mértola, Mouraria (Lisbon) and Sintra. These are unravelled in the exhibition, which also shows us other ways of resorting to the past and asserting identities, whether religious or secular, collective or institutional.
Besides the photographic and film documentation produced in the context of field research, as well as documentation from various archives, the exhibition includes items from the collections of the Mértola Museum, the National Museum of Archaeology and Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua, as well as items from private collections.
