International Museum Day 2023  – Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing

International Museum Day 2023  – Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing

International Museum Day, celebrated on 18th May, was first commemorated in 1977, organised by ICOM (International Council of Museums) with the aim of raising awareness in civil society to the fact that ‘museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enriching cultures, developing mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples”.

The theme for 2023 is ‘Museums, Sustainability and Wellbeing’, to highlight museums’ important contribution to communities’ wellbeing and sustainable development. The role of the Mértola Museum – Cláudio Torres stands out in this context given the relationship it establishes between heritage research and dissemination and local development, combining heritage, territory and community with sustainability concerns, always relating them to the surrounding environment and wellbeing

Once again the 18th of May coincides with the dates of the Islamic Festival of Mértola, and therefore the commemoration of this day is integrated into its programme. The sections of the Mértola Museum are open to the public with extended opening hours – from 10.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. and admission is free. In addition, there will be two temporary exhibitions:

– In the Palaeo-Christian Basilica of the Museum – ‘From the root to the sound’ – Exhibition of chordophones by José Cardoso and Paulo Cardoso;

– In the Mértola Castle Exhibition Gallery – “Crafts & Design – Loulé Criativo Exhibition, Passa ao Futuro and Via Criativa Association’.
