Cláudio Torres – European Heritage Europa Nostra Award 2023
The European Commission and Europa Nostra have honoured Professor Cláudio Torres with the European Heritage Europa Nostra Award 2023, in the ‘Heritage Champions’ category, acknowledging his distinguished work in promoting the enhancement and conservation of Islamic heritage in Portugal over more than 45 years, in which he and the Mértola Archaeological Site played a pivotal role.
The panel of the European Commission and Europa Nostra awarded this prize to a total of 30 remarkable heritage projects from 21 countries. The City Council of Mértola congratulates Professor Cláudio Torres and the team at the Mértola Archeological Site for this distinguished award, which greatly honours Mértola and all the work developed to safeguard and enhance cultural heritage.
