International Seminar from Sarq to Garb: Funerary spaces, society and urbanism in al-Andalus /Maqbara II) – 16 to 18 May 2024 – Submission of papers and posters
Maqbara II is the second major international event organised by the R&D project ‘Maqbara. Arabisation, Islamisation and Resistance through Cemetery Spaces in South-Eastern al-Andalus‘ (PID2020-112188GB-100) with the collaboration of the Mértola Archaeological Site, the University of Granada, funded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the Mértola City Council.
The objectives are to analyse the latest discoveries about Al-Andalus maqbaras, to debate the contributions of sciences such as statistics, anthropology or biomedicine to the study of medieval societies and, finally, to establish a proposal on the relationship between living beings and cemeteries. Prosopography, the gender perspective and object analysis will also be present. Interdisciplinarity is thus ensured in order to ultimately answer the project’s main question: Islamisation, Arabisation and the presence of groups that preserve their identity.
