International Meeting ‘Roman Cities of the Conventus Pacencis in dialogue with the southwest of the peninsula’

The University of the Algarve and Mértola will be holding, on the 11th and 12th of May, an international scientific meeting on Roman cities, bringing together specialists from several Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and German universities.

The meeting aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first edition of the obra mater of Roman archaeology in Portugal, the book ‘Portugal Romano’ by Jorge de Alarcão. The author of this national and international reference work will attend and participate in discussions that will seek to confront the realities of the Roman cities of southern Portugal with their counterparts in the Spanish provinces of Andalusia and Extremadura

It brings together specialists from the Archaeology Institute of Mérida, the University of Coimbra, the University of Huelva, the University of the Algarve, the University of Cordoba, the University of Seville and the Mértola Archaeological Site, among others.

The event is organised by the Centre for Studies in Archaeology, Arts and Heritage Sciences, and supported by the City Council of Mértola/Mértola Museum – Cláudio Torres. It will be taking place at the University of the Algarve, in Faro, on the 11th of May, and in Mértola on the 12th of May.
