International Conference for the Diffusion and Enhancement of the Archaeological Heritage
Mértola, 17 June 2023
Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) increasingly occupy a central place in the daily life of citizens and are part of the cultural and leisure offer linked to heritage and tourism.
In the case of Archaeology, which needs a strong mediation between the object observed and the visitor, these technologies applied to Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality can assume a vital role to facilitate the understanding of heritage and provide fascinating immersive experiences. Through them it is possible to enable both tourists and local communities to enjoy the legacy of the past without affecting its safeguarding.
The aim of these technologies is not to replace the unequalled real experience of visiting an archaeological site, but to take advantage of the potential of digital resources to publicise and encourage visits to archaeological sites, on the one hand, and to provide more and better information to visitors by offering resources of a diverse nature and in their language, on the other.
These are the assumptions of the ECLIMUS projects (expansion and capitalisation of the results of the LIMUS project technological transfer for free access to museums and archaeological spaces in Extremadura and Alentejo based on mobile devices) of the POCTEP Programme and ‘Present to the Past – Archaeological Itineraries of the Alentejo’ of the ‘Valorizar’ programme of the National Tourism Authority. Both projects were presented at the International Conference for the Diffusion and Enhancement of Archaeological Heritage, which took place in the Grand Hall of Mértola Town Hall, a partner in these projects, on 17 June 2023, aimed at professionals, technicians and decision-makers in the fields of archaeology, heritage and museums.
