IACAM project – 2024 work campaign

The archaeological work for the 4th campaign of archaeological excavations in the area known as Cerca das Alcarias in the village of Mesquita (Espírito Santo) took place between 20 May and 3 June, as part of the IACAM project – Intervenção arqueológica nas Cercas das Alcarias, with the scientific coordination of Maria de Fátima Palma (Mértola Archaeological Site) and Bilal Sarr (University of Granada). The excavation involved an international team of researchers and students from Portugal and Spain, totalling 12 people, who throughout the process were able to socialise with the Mesquita village community and share the first results of the excavation.

This campaign is part of the IACAM project being developed by the University of Granada and the Mértola Archaeological Site. It received financial and/or logistical support from the Maqbara R&D project (Spanish Government Ministries of Science, Innovation and Universities, and the University of Granada), Mértola City Council and the Sociedade Recreativa Mesquitense.
