‘From the Root to the Sound’ – Exhibition of chordophones by José Cardoso and Paulo Cardoso
12 to 21 May 2023 – Paleo-Christian Basilica
The ‘Chordophones – From the root to the sound’ exhibition is part of the programme of the 12th Mértola Islamic Festival and will be open from 12 to 21 May in the museum centre of the Paleo-Christian Basilica of Mértola Museum – Claudio Torres.
José Cardoso and Paulo Cardoso’s exhibition will allow you to appreciate a varied typology of musical instruments of the same family… the chordophones. As the ‘campaniça‘ guitar is the most rooted chordophone in this geographical area, you will have the opportunity to learn about its construction process in this exhibition.
“Although this art is the perfect symbiosis between idealism and reality, it is still a craft. Instrument builders, being artists, are no more than artisans, cohabiting with other professionals such as woodworkers, sculptors, painters or blacksmiths… being very distant from the thought of intellectuals or academics‘ (José António Cardoso).
As part of the 12th Mértola Islamic Festival Programme, workshops will be held on 18, 19, 20 and 21 May, at 10 a.m. and 2.30 p.m., at the Exhibition site (see conditions of access at the Secretariat). The Construction manual for the ‘campaniça’ guitar will be presented on 21 May, at 2.30 p.m..
